AI Overviews are coming to your Gmail at work

Google announced at its Google Cloud Next conference that its AI Overviews feature will be integrated into Gmail for workplace users. This feature, currently used to summarize Google Search results, will now provide concise answers to user queries directly from their emails, eliminating the need to manually sift through multiple messages.

Key Functionality:

  • Natural Language Queries: Users can ask questions in plain language.
  • Instant Summaries: AI Overviews will pull information from across various emails and conversations to provide direct answers.
  • Use Cases: The feature is designed to help with business-related inquiries such as performance updates, project milestones, invoices, feedback on documents, and travel details.

Availability and Configuration:

  • Default Setting: AI Overviews will be the default for users with Gemini for Workspace in Gmail enabled and Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail enabled.
  • End-User Settings: End users must also have "Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet" and "Google Workspace smart features" enabled.
  • Subscription Tiers: The feature is now available to business, enterprise, and education customers across various Google Workspace plans (Business Starter, Standard, Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard, Plus; Frontline Plus) and for consumers with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions.

  • AI Overviews in Drive: This feature is also being made broadly available to eligible Workspace and Google AI plans, having previously been in beta.

This integration aims to streamline information retrieval within the workplace, aligning with the trend of AI becoming a primary tool for accessing information.
