Google Adds AI Skills to Chrome to Help You Save Favorite Workflows

Google is enhancing its Chrome web browser with new AI capabilities through a feature called "Skills." This allows users to save and reuse AI prompts across different websites, eliminating the need for repetitive typing.

Key Features and Functionality:

  • AI Prompt Reusability: Users can now save frequently used AI prompts, such as those for suggesting vegan substitutions in recipes or summarizing lengthy documents.
  • Gemini Integration: This feature builds upon Google's existing integration of its Gemini AI into Chrome, which enables users to ask questions about web pages, summarize content, and perform various tasks.
  • Accessing Skills: Skills can be accessed from chat history and reused in Gemini within Chrome by typing a forward slash (/) or clicking a plus sign (+) button. The Skill will then operate on the current web page and any selected additional tabs.
  • Editable Skills: Users have the ability to edit their saved Skills at any time.
  • Use Cases: Early adopters have utilized Skills for tasks in health and wellness (e.g., calculating protein macros), shopping comparisons, and document summarization.
  • Skills Library: To assist users, Google is launching a Skills library with pre-programmed tasks and workflows for productivity, shopping, recipes, budgeting, and more. These can be added to a user's saved Skills and customized.
  • Confirmation for Actions: Similar to other Gemini actions in Chrome, Skills will prompt users for confirmation before executing sensitive actions like sending emails or adding calendar events.

Rollout and Availability:

  • The Skills feature is beginning to roll out to Chrome desktop users who are signed into their Google account.
  • Initially, the feature will only function if the Chrome browser's language is set to English (US).

Competitive Landscape:

This development occurs in a competitive browser market, with other companies like OpenAI (Atlas), Perplexity (Comet), and The Browser Company (Dia) also introducing AI integrations into their browsers.
