Google Maps Can Now Write Captions for Your Photos Using AI

Google is enhancing its Maps platform with AI-powered features to simplify user contributions. The most significant update is the integration of Gemini, which can now automatically generate captions for photos and videos shared by users about specific locations.

Key Features and Updates:

  • AI-Generated Captions: When users select photos or videos to share, Gemini will analyze the content and suggest a caption. Users have the option to edit or discard these suggestions, aiming to provide a quick start for content sharing.
    • This feature is currently available in English on iOS in the U.S. and is slated for a global rollout and expansion to Android in the coming months.
  • Streamlined Media Contribution: Users can now more easily find relevant media to share. By enabling media access for Google Maps, users will see photos and videos from their recent experiences directly within the "Contribute" tab. Tapping on a photo from this tab allows for immediate posting.
    • Photo and video recommendations are now available globally on both iOS and Android.
  • Enhanced Contribution Tracking: Google is improving how users track their impact on Maps.
    • Total points earned will be displayed in the "Contribute" tab.
    • "Local Guide" levels will be more prominently featured on profile pages.
    • Achievement badges have been updated to better highlight expertise (e.g., "expert fact-finder," "master photographer").
    • High-level contributors will be more easily identifiable with new gold-colored profiles.
