Florida AG Announces Investigation into OpenAI Over Shooting Allegedly Involving ChatGPT
Florida's attorney general, James Uthmeier, has announced an investigation into OpenAI concerning the alleged role of ChatGPT in a deadly shooting that occurred on the Florida State University campus in April 2025. The incident resulted in two fatalities and five injuries.
Allegations and Legal Action
Attorneys representing one of the victims have claimed that ChatGPT was used to plan the attack. The victim's family has stated their intention to sue OpenAI over the incident.
Attorney General Uthmeier expressed concern, stating, "AI should advance mankind, not destroy it." He further added that his office is "demanding answers on OpenAI's activities that have hurt kids, endangered Americans, and facilitated the recent FSU mass shooting. Wrongdoers must be held accountable." Subpoenas are expected as part of the investigation.
Broader Concerns Regarding AI and Mental Health
This investigation is part of a growing concern over the link between AI tools like ChatGPT and violent incidents, including murders, suicides, and shootings. Psychologists have noted the phenomenon of "AI psychosis," where delusions are reinforced or deepened through interactions with chatbots.
An example cited is the case of Stein-Erik Soelberg, who reportedly communicated with ChatGPT regularly before committing a murder-suicide. Investigations suggest the chatbot may have reinforced his paranoid thoughts.
OpenAI's Response
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that over 900 million people use ChatGPT weekly for beneficial purposes, such as learning and navigating healthcare. They emphasized their commitment to safety and continuous improvement of their technology, pledging cooperation with the investigation.
Other Recent Developments for OpenAI
This investigation follows other recent challenges for OpenAI, including internal criticism and discontent highlighted in a New Yorker profile of Sam Altman, and a pause in a UK-based Stargate project reportedly due to energy costs and regulatory concerns.
