OpenAI says Codex is coming to your phone

Codex is going mobile. The coding tool — which OpenAI launched approximately a year ago — has now been integrated into the ChatGPT app, allowing users to monitor and manage their development workflows remotely.

Key Features

  • Cross-device workflow management: Users can see their Codex live environments on any device where it is running
  • Full control from mobile: Work across all threads, review outputs, approve commands, change models, or start new tasks
  • Platform availability: Currently in preview, available to all plans on iOS and Android
  • More than remote control: Not just about dispatching tasks, but comprehensive workflow management

Recent Codex Updates

  • Background desktop operation (April): Codex can now run autonomously in desktop environments
  • Chrome extension (May): Allows the agent to work in live browser sessions
  • Mobile integration (Now): Remote monitoring and management via ChatGPT app

Competitive Landscape

Anthroptic released a similar feature called Remote Control in February, allowing users to remotely monitor Claude Code's work. This flurry of feature releases speaks to the intense competition between OpenAI and Anthropic over whose agentic coding tool will become the most widely used.

While Claude Code has gained popularity among businesses and tech professionals over the past year, both tools continue to be widely used in the market.
