OpenAI Announces New Advanced Security for ChatGPT Accounts, Including a Partnership with Yubico
OpenAI is launching Advanced Account Security (AAS), a set of opt-in protections for ChatGPT users designed for high-value individuals—but available to anyone who wants them.
Key Features
Partnership with Yubico: OpenAI has partnered with digital security provider Yubico to link two new security key products to ChatGPT accounts:
- YubiKey C NFC
- YubiKey C Nano
Protection Against Phishing: The partnership is designed to protect users from phishing threats, which are increasingly targeting chatbot users.
Hardware Security Keys: These small pieces of hardware connect to digital accounts via USB ports and contain unique cryptographic identifiers, allowing only the person in possession of the key to log into connected accounts.
Target Users
OpenAI suggests that AAS is a good fit for:
- Political dissidents
- Journalists
- Researchers
- Elected officials
- Enterprise users whose corporate secrets are stored in ChatGPT sessions
Important Tradeoff
While security-key-enabled accounts offer stronger protection, there's a critical tradeoff:
- If the key is lost, OpenAI cannot help recover access
- In practice, this means conversations could be lost forever
Industry Context
Growing Threat: There is a growing body of literature showing that bad actors are increasingly targeting chatbot users for extortion-worthy information.
Industry Focus on Security:
- Anthropic recently announced a new cybersecurity model called Mythos
- OpenAI launched a new framework for digital defense
- Digital security is becoming a bigger focus across the AI industry
What Yubico CEO Says
"Ultimately, our intent is to drastically reduce the threat of unauthorized access to sensitive data in OpenAI accounts worldwide," said Yubico CEO Jerrod Chong.
Launch Date: April 30, 2026
